Why I Show Up Every April (And Every Other Month Too)

Every April, autism shows up in everyone’s feed.

This year, I’m hearing a shift — from Autism Awareness Month to Autism Acceptance Month.

And honestly… I get it.

Awareness says, “Look over here.”

Acceptance says, “Sit with us.”

That matters.

But here’s the truth most people won’t say:

Changing the name doesn’t change the life.

I’m a father of adult twins who are both autistic. Moderate. Nonverbal. And they will live with my wife and me for the rest of their lives. Not because something failed — but because this is our reality. This is our family. This is our love.

I don’t show up in April because it’s trending.

I show up in February when the paperwork piles up and no one sees it.

I show up in July when the heat brings sensory overload and plans fall apart.

I show up in November when the holidays don’t look like everyone else’s version of joy.

I show up every day.

Because this life doesn’t run on hashtags.

But April still matters.

Not for the posts. Not for the colors. Not even for the label.

It matters because people are paying attention — even if just for a moment.

And if I can use that moment to show what this life actually looks like — the hard parts, the beautiful parts, the real parts — then I’m going to take it.

That’s what Brownies Universe is about.

It’s not just a story.

It’s not just awareness.

It’s not even just acceptance.

It’s understanding. It’s community. It’s building something real for families who live this every single day.

So if you know someone on the spectrum — welcome.

If you ARE on the spectrum — I see you.

If you’re new to this — stay.

You might walk away seeing the world a little differently.

This April, I’m showing up every day.

Not to perform.

Not to trend.

But to tell the truth.

Let’s go.
