Building Your Village: Finding Community in the Disability Space
Caregiving & SupportJune 7, 2026Brownie
They say it takes a village, and in the disability community, that couldn’t be more true. But building that village? That’s where the real work begins.
Finding your people — those who truly understand the sleepless nights, the IEP meetings, the small victories that feel monumental — can be transformative. Your village might include other parents, therapists, teachers, online communities, or neighbors who just get it.
Here are some practical steps to start building your support network:
- Start local: Check community centers, churches, and schools for support groups
- Go online: Facebook groups, Reddit communities, and specialized forums connect you with others who share your experiences
- Be open: Sometimes your village member is the parent sitting next to you in the waiting room
- Give back: The strongest villages are built on reciprocity
Remember, you don’t have to do this alone. Your village is out there — sometimes you just have to take the first step.
